Search for magnetic monopoles using proportional counters filled with helium gas
Slow magnetic monopoles in cosmic rays have been searched at sea level with the detector which consists of seven layers of proportional counters filled with a mixture of He + 20% CH4. The velocities and the energy losses of the incident particles are measured. The upper limit of flux for the monopoles in the velocity range of 1 x 0.001 Beta 4 x 0.001 is 2.78 x 10 to the minus 12th power square centimeters sr sec of 90% confidence level
Cyclic di-GMP mediates a histidine kinase/phosphatase switch by noncovalent domain cross-linking
Histidine kinases are key components of regulatory networks in bacteria. Although many of these enzymes are bifunctional, mediating both phosphorylation and dephosphorylation of downstream targets, the molecular details of this central regulatory switch are unclear. We showed recently that the universal second messenger cyclic di-guanosine monophosphate (c-di-GMP) drives Caulobacter crescentus cell cycle progression by forcing the cell cycle kinase CckA from its default kinase into phosphatase mode. We use a combination of structure determination, modeling, and functional analysis to demonstrate that c-di-GMP reciprocally regulates the two antagonistic CckA activities through noncovalent cross-linking of the catalytic domain with the dimerization histidine phosphotransfer (DHp) domain. We demonstrate that both c-di-GMP and ADP (adenosine diphosphate) promote phosphatase activity and propose that c-di-GMP stabilizes the ADP-bound quaternary structure, which allows the receiver domain to access the dimeric DHp stem for dephosphorylation. In silico analyses predict that c-di-GMP control is widespread among bacterial histidine kinases, arguing that it can replace or modulate canonical transmembrane signaling
Improvement of zone control induction heating equipment for high-speed processing of semiconductor
In this paper, the effect of dividing into several small coil groups having different current and frequency on heating characteristics is investigated using FEM (finite element method). The heating characteristics of graphite of each coil is examined, and a useful information for controlling current and frequency, which realize the nearly uniform heating, is obtained.</p
Correlation of high energy muons with primary composition in extensive air shower
An experimental investigation of high energy muons above 200 GeV in extensive air showers has been made for studying high energy interaction and primary composition of cosmic rays of energies in the range 10 to the 14th power approx. 10 to the 15th power eV. The muon energies are estimated from the burst sizes initiated by the muons in the rock, which are measured by four layers of proportional counters, each of area 5 x 2.6 sq m, placed at 30 m.w.e. deep, Funasaka tunnel vertically below the air shower array. These results are compared with Monte Carlo simulations based on the scaling model and the fireball model for two primary compositions, all proton and mixed
High-precision CTE measurement of hybrid C/SiC composite for cryogenic space telescopes
This paper presents highly precise measurements of thermal expansion of a
"hybrid" carbon-fiber reinforced silicon carbide composite,
HB-Cesic\textregistered - a trademark of ECM, in the temperature region of
\sim310-10K. Whilst C/SiC composites have been considered to be promising for
the mirrors and other structures of space-borne cryogenic telescopes, the
anisotropic thermal expansion has been a potential disadvantage of this
material. HB-Cesic\textregistered is a newly developed composite using a
mixture of different types of chopped, short carbon-fiber, in which one of the
important aims of the development was to reduce the anisotropy. The
measurements indicate that the anisotropy was much reduced down to 4% as a
result of hybridization. The thermal expansion data obtained are presented as
functions of temperature using eighth-order polynomials separately for the
horizontal (XY-) and vertical (Z-) directions of the fabrication process. The
average CTEs and their dispersion (1{\sigma}) in the range 293-10K derived from
the data for the XY- and Z-directions were 0.8050.003\times10
K and 0.837\pm0.001\times10 K, respectively. The absolute
accuracy and the reproducibility of the present measurements are suggested to
be better than 0.01\times10 K and 0.001\times(10)^{-6} K^{-1},
respectively. The residual anisotropy of the thermal expansion was consistent
with our previous speculation regarding carbon-fiber, in which the residual
anisotropy tended to lie mainly in the horizontal plane.Comment: Accepted by Cryogeincs. 12 pages, 3 figures, 1 tabll
